MY STUDENT'S WORK
In Design I and III courses, first year undergraduates explore design principles, terminology, and methodologies using both analog and digital tools.
Below are some examples of our assignments.
POINT, LINE, PLANE & 2D TO 3D TRANSLATION
In the first part of this assignment, students explored the seven common principles of design to create 2D art that embodied their chosen element. Using a range of viewpoint perspectives to draft their ideas, students then considered how to translate their composition and principles into a 3D constructed form.
PATTERN & COLOR
With the concept of a mandala serving as their jumping-off point, students first created repeating patterns, comparing differences between analog and digital process. Students then colored their mandalas using set relationships, such as triadic or complimentary, to instill their patterns with emotion or story.
CONCEAL & REVEAL
In this assignment, students created a 3D dioramic scene that visually represented multiple interpretations of a chosen word. The creation needed to include multiple layers and be able to switch between two perspectives, such as by shining a light to reveal hidden imagery.
DYNAMIC PAGES
Together with a partner, students considered and brought to life the concept of movement either through dynamic kinetic mechanisms or stop motion. The final design needed to take the form of a two-panel diptych that underwent a transition when moving from one side to the other.
